With summer approaching, the Cedar River in Waterloo will soon be rising.

City workers plan to begin the process of activating the river's inflatable downtown dam on Monday, April 23, 2018. Inflation is expected to take two days to complete.

According to city officials, the river level upstream from downtown Waterloo will rise approximately four feet after the dam is fully inflated. The higher water will allow for more boating and river recreational activities.

The dam is designed to be lowered when river levels are high. Individual sections of the dam can also be lowered to clean out debris or log jams.

City officials said the dam will remain inflated until Nov. 1, weather permitting.
