Iowa health officials reported the biggest daily surge in the number of new coronavirus cases, both statewide and in Black Hawk County.

The Iowa Department of Public Health released the latest figures Tuesday morning, showing the virus is present is 82 of the state's 99 counties. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced 189 additional cases, which increases the total number in Iowa to 1,899. Reynolds said nearly half of the new cases -- 86 -- were related to an outbreak at the Tyson Food meatpacking plant in Columbus Junction.

Black Hawk County also had its biggest one-day increase, reporting 16 new cases of COVID-19. The county has had 78 cases since testing began on March 7th, including 66 in the last week. According to state officials, 16 people have recovered from the virus in Black Hawk County.

So far, 49 Iowans have died from coronavirus. Six additional deaths were reported on Tuesday, including one in Tama County. State health officials said the victim was an older over the age of 81.
