Seven different players scored goals to help the Waterloo Black Hawks ground the Central Illinois Flying Aces 7-2 Saturday (Jan 6, 2018) night a Young Arena.

It marked a season-high goals total for the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Seven different players scored and eight Hawks had multiple points.

Waterloo struck first on the power play 3:31 into the game. Michael Ferrandino’s shot bounced off the end boards right to Sam Huff, who stuffed in the second try. The Hawks made the score 2-0 at 16:28. A wraparound try by Solag Bakich skipped across the crease to Jackson Cates who fired it inside the opposite post.

The Aces drew back within one at 17:43. Griffin Lunn chased down a cleared puck for a one-on-one chance against Jared Moe. The Hawks’ goalie made an all-out save, but Calen Kiefiuk pursued the rebound and knocked it in with Moe still down.

In the second, the Hawks edged a little farther away from Central Illinois. Garrett Wait drove a shot into the net from above the left circle at 10:44. The goal was assisted by Jack Drury, extending his point streak to ten straight games. A little more than two minutes later, Kiefiuk struck for a second time, swiping a puck at the Waterloo blue line and lifting the resulting chance to the top corner.

However Waterloo was determined to go to the locker room with a larger lead. With 12.2 seconds to go, Hank Sorensen crashed the net to send in a chance through traffic. It was a follow-up on his own initial chance, which had been saved, and a subsequent Garrett Wait try, which bounced into the slot off the post.

In the third, the Hawks pulled away, beginning with a Bobby Trivigno power play goal on a rebound at 5:42. Joey Cassetti boosted Waterloo further ahead at 9:28, finishing a chance in transition created by Bakich. Cassetti went on to add an assist at 18:42, teeing up a rocket fired into the net by Matej Blumel.

The Black Hawks return to action on the road against the Madison Capitols next Friday. It will be the first of three games in three days; Waterloo visits the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders the next night. Waterloo closes out the weekend when they host the Omaha Lancers on Sunday afternoon, January 14th, at 3:05 PM.
