Waverly-Shell Rock fell to Lewis Central of Council Bluffs in the opening round of the 2017 Iowa High School Girls State Volleyball State Tournament.

The Go-Hawks (42-6) were swept by the Titans, 3-0, at he U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night (Nov. 7, 2017).

W-SR hung close through most of the first two sets, coming up short by a few points during each game (25-21 and 25-20). Lewis Central (33-5) took control in the third frame to secure the match, winning 25-16 to advance to the Class 4A semifinals.

The Go-Hawks' offense was led by Jayme Willemssen, who tallied a match-high 14 kills. Claire Marsh had 24 assists and 14 digs. Britney Young added 12 digs.

Although a tough way to end the season, a top-eight finish in the state is an achievement that Waverly-Shell Rock should be proud of. The 2017 campaign was also highlighted by a pair of milestone victories.

Eavon Woodin became the first head coach in Iowa history to reach 1,000 career wins when the Go-Hawks defeated Oelwein on Sept. 12. She collected her 900th victory at Waverly-Shell in the regular season finale. In 37 years of coaching, Woodin owns a 1,029-285 record.
