Driver Rear-Ended When Stopping for Pheasant Family

The phrase "no good deed goes unpunished" may be what a motorist was thinking, when he stopped for a family of pheasants crossing the road, and was rear-ended in the process.

This happened at about 4pm Thursday (July 23) on Highway 9 in Frankville Township, in rural Winneshiek County.

38 year old James McCarron of Minneapolis, was driving west on Highway 9, when he noticed a pheasant walk out onto the road. He stopped his car when several pheasant chicks also entered the roadway.

A vehicle behind McCarron, driven by 71 year old Frederick Axmear of Decorah, tried to avoid a collision, but was not able to stop in time, and rear-ended the other vehicle.

Neither driver had to be taken to a hospital.

There was a total of $12,000 damage to McCarron's 2015 Subaru Forrester and Axmear's 2003 Buick Park Avenue.
