If you haven't noticed...it's been a bit toasty this week....and it's gonna get HOTTER. Beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Saturday, the Heat Index values could reach as high as 110* in some locations.

An Excessive Heat Watch means that Heat Index values are expected to reach or exceed 110°F* and not fall below 75°F* for at least a 48 hour period, beginning in the next 12 to 48 hours.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines said that they don't officially keep track of heat index records, but on July 25, 1936, when the high temp reached 110° in Des Moines, the 'feels like' temp was 122°F on that day.

Heat is the #1 weather-related killer in the United States! Here's some tips from the National Weather Service:

  • First and foremost, minimize your time outside, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Stay in an air conditioned building.
  • If you must be outside, wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water or natural juices if you are out in the heat, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
  • Think about others! NEVER leave children in a car on even a moderately warm day as conditions in the car can quickly heat to unhealthy levels. Check on the elderly or other people at risk.
