A father and son have been charged with weapon and drug violations after police searched a Waterloo home Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation.

Authorities arrested 19-year-old Devonte Wright on three counts of felony possession of firearms, fourth-degree theft and possession of controlled substance. Wright’s father, David Wright Sr., was also charged with third-offense possession of a controlled substance.

On Thursday, Waterloo police officers assigned to the Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) and the Tactical Unit executive a search warrant at 2026 Plain View St. According to a press release, the search was connected to an on-going weapons investigation involving Devonte Wright.

Authorities said officers located three handguns, ammunition and marijuana during the search. According to police, one of the handguns was reported stolen after a Waterloo residential burglary last month.

Court records show Devonte Wright and David Wright are both prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony and weapons convictions. Police say Devonte Wright also had a valid parole violation warrant out of Polk County at the time of his arrest.
