Kirkwood Women’s Basketball Has Become a Junior College Dynasty

As March Madness continues to give us upsets and bracket-busters, something of a certainty happened again for the Kirkwood Community College women's basketball team. A National Championship.

On Saturday night, the #2 seed Kirkwood Community College Eagles defeated the #1 seed Johnson County, Kansas team 69-58, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette. It is the team's 9th National Championship. Yes, NINE.

The Gazette reports that the Eagles never trailed after the first quarter of the NJCAA Division II title game in Joplin, Missouri. The Eagles handed the Cavaliers their first and only loss of the season and got to take home some hardware for their troubles!

Jenna Twedt scored 18 points to lead the Eagles, according to the Gazette. Twedt starred at Benton Community High School and went 7 of 10 from the floor for Kirkwood. Demetria Prewitt added 13 points and 9 rebounds for Kirkwood.

In a state where other women's college basketball programs and stars get much of the spotlight, Kirkwood deserves some shine too. Head coach Kim Muhl has built a dynasty, leading the Eagles to 9 National Championships, including 2 in the past 3 seasons. The Gazette points out that this Kirkwood team got hot at the right time, ending the season on a 21-game winning streak!
