A multi-vehicle, chain-reaction accident left one person dead in Black Hawk County late Monday morning.

Sheriff's officials said Veryl Wickett, 81, of Indianola, was killed when the sport utility vehicle he was driving struck an on-coming car head-on while attempting to pass two pick-ups that were pulling trailers containing live elk. The accident happened just before noon on U.S. Highway 63 (South Hudson Road) about seven miles south of Hudson, or approximately two miles north of the Iowa Highway 175 intersection.

According to authorities, the impact of the crash caused Wickett's SUV to hit both pick-ups and trailers. The car collided with one pick-up and trailer.

Sheriff's officials said Wickett died at the scene, while the car's driver was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and later released. Authorities identified the injured driver as Jason Styve, 39, of Cedar Falls.

The crash remains under investigation.
