On Sunday night, the National Weather Service in Phoenix's radar picked up a gigantic colony of bats emerging as the sun set.

There are 28 bat species that reside in Arizona, experts believe these were likely Mexican Free-Tailed Bats. Free-tail bats consume enormous amounts of moths and other insects. In colonies that contain millions of bats, it is estimated that 250 tons of insects can be eaten every night. Mexican Free-Tail bats can live up to 18 years.

Iowa is the home to nine species of bats. Two of the most common bats in the state are the little brown bat and the big brown bat.
