It happened just after 11am Saturday (Aug. 22), on Interstate 380 near Evansdale.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a southbound pickup driven by 63 year old Robert Schmaltz of Raymond was traveling in the outside lane, when Schmaltz attempted to merge to the left.

His pickup collided with the rear of a car driven by 20 year old Emily Droste of Center Point. Both vehicles spun out, and landed in the ditch.

Schmaltz died from his injuries. Droste was not hurt.
The accident happened during a heavy rain storm.
