A referee at a college game in Maine was hospitalized after the school fired a CANNON and the blast hit him in the face during the homecoming game.

The sheriff's department says a former student brought his own cannon to the game and loaded it with black powder. The school traditionally fires a cannon loaded with a blank shotgun shell after its team scores, but in this case, a "wad" that was placed into the cannon shot out and blasted the referee in the face.

The referee was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The School’s President said afterwards that "cannons will no longer be permitted on campus for future events."
