A memorial service will be held in La Porte City this weekend to remember a 16-year-old autistic boy whose disappearance in April triggered a massive four-month search that involved hundreds of volunteers and dozens of law enforcement agencies.

The service of remembrance to honor Jake Wilson will be held in the Union High School gymnasium, beginning at 2 PM on Sunday (Oct. 7, 2018). The school is located on the western edge of La Porte City, at 200 Adams St.

In a press release announcing the event, La Porte City Police Chief Chris Brecher said the public is invited to gather before the service at 12:30 PM for condolences and to share their memories with one another. According to Brecher, Jake's family is hoping that everyone who helped with the search will be able to attend.

Wilson, a sophomore at Cedar Falls High School who previously attended Union High School, went missing on April 7 when he went for a walk to nearby Wolf Creek and didn’t return home. In the days and weeks that followed his disappearance, volunteers combed nearly 255-square-miles around La Porte City in an attempt to find Jake, but their search didn't turn up any clues.

The search went on for more than four months. Sadly, it ended the week of Aug. 12 when recreational kayakers found Wilson's remains in Wolf Creek, about a mile downstream from La Porte City.
