Storm Damage - 032820

Severe thunderstorms damaged a rural Waterloo farm and an Oelwein apartment complex Saturday as they rolled across northeast Iowa. There were multiple reports of tornadoes, funnel clouds, hail and high wind.

Mid-American Energy reported more than 1,400 Waterloo customers without power after the storm moved across the city around 6 PM. Electricity was restored to all but three of the effected customers by 11 PM.

One of the hardest-hit areas was a section of northwest Oelwein, where high winds uprooted trees in and around Woodlawn Cemetery. A few blocks north at Buffalo Run Apartments, 400 13th Ave. NW, part of a wall was torn off one of the complex's 12 buildings and a second building lost siding.

South of Waterloo, some buildings were destroyed on a farm along Ansborough Ave. Debris was scattered across the road and into a field.

There were no reports of injuries associated with the storms.

The National Weather Service reported two tornadoes touching down in rural parts of Black Hawk County, both near Hudson. The first one was spotted five miles south of Hudson at 5:40 PM. The second tornado touched down four miles east of Hudson at 5:50 PM.

Multiple funnel clouds were spotted over Waterloo. A very well-defined funnel cloud formed over Evansdale before the storm rapidly moved out of the metro area. Weather spotters later reported a tornado on the ground in Fayette County, northeast of Fairbank.

Before its arrival in the Cedar Valley, the storm also produced a tornado in Marshall County. The National Weather Service said a weak twister touched down about two miles south-southwest of Rhoades just before 4:30 PM. NWS also reported wind damage about four miles southeast of Dike in Grundy County.
