Welcome, college students! Hopefully you're enjoying your first days on campus. But I have some bad news for you; there's no promise that the degree you’re working toward will pay off. And if you really want to cash in on your college experience, the right major typically goes a long way to achieving that. But there's more to the numbers than meets the eye.

The Cashlorette crunched the numbers to find the most--and least--valuable college majors. No surprise, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) degrees are more likely to lead to job placement, while those on the more creative side are struggling:

The statistics may be a little frightening--and probably not something you're thinking about during your first kegger--but keep this in mind. Ultimately, you're the one that dictates your future.

As someone with a performing arts degree, I can tell you that a lot of what's described here is true--there will be frustration, and that feeling of "am I good enough?" lingers for a while. But if it's something you love doing, if you can't see yourself doing anything else, it'll be worth it. I was a theatre major in college, and the training I received has definitely benefited me in the long term. And being surrounded by so many incredibly talented and creative people provided plenty of inspiration.

Maybe you're just beginning your foray into college, maybe you're about to complete your degree program, or maybe you're returning to school to pursue something different. Either way, don't let stats like this play with your head. The job market is more competitive now than ever before, so learn as much as you possibly can. Develop skills and traits that make you irreplaceable, and combine those with your desire and passion. That, at least to me, is the true measure of success.
