Third Suspect Arrested In Waterloo Home Invasion

Waterloo police have arrested a third person in connection with a recent home invasion.

Cassandra Wright, 36, of Waterloo, was taken into Tuesday evening. She was charged with first-degree burglary, intimidation with a weapon and assault while participating in a felony.

According to police, four intruders -- two armed with firearms -- entered a home at 532 1/2 Western Avenue shortly after 6 PM Monday. Authorities said Wright and another suspect fled the scene, and two men found were inside the house.

Officers discovered James Welton, 40, of Independence, and Larry Clayton, 52, of Hazelton, hiding in the basement. Welton was arrested on charges of fourth-degree theft, first-degree burglary, assault while participating in a felony, carrying weapons, intimidation with a weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Polie took Clayton into custody on charges of intimidation with a weapon, assault while participating in a felony and first-degree burglary.

Initially, authorities said officers seized a 9mm handgun that had been reported stolen from Cedar Falls. In a news release announcing Wright's arrest, police said they also recovered a .223-caliber rifle reported stolen from Watonwan County, Minn.

At least one shot was fired during the home invasion. Police said one of the home's three occupants was grazed in the cheek by a bullet.

Waterloo police continue to investigate the case.
