A three vehicle accident Monday afternoon in Eastern Iowa, has taken the lives of two people.


At about 2:30pm Monday (Oct. 5), emergency workers from Linn County were called to the intersection of Covington Road and Gibney Road, south of Palo. Deputies from the Linn County Sheriff's Office discovered a semi and 2 other vehicles collided, and the semi was engulfed.

Passing motorists pulled the semi driver out of his cab; he was flown by Air Care to an area hospital.

The drivers in the other vehicles, a pickup and a car, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Linn County Sheriff is withholding the names of the victims until relatives can be contacted. The accident is still under investigation.

The Linn County Sheriff was assisted at the scene by fire departments from Palo, Hiawatha, and Atkins, as well as the area ambulance and Air Care.
