A construction project on U.S. Highway 20 in Buchanan County will impact motorists most of the spring and summer.

Iowa Department of Transportation officials said road crews will be paving the highway between Jesup and Independence, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction. Construction workers will be using a hot-mix asphalt to resurface the pavement between the County Road V-65/Benson Shady Grove Ave. (exit 235) and the 20th Avenue Southwest (exit 253) interchanges.

The five-month project is scheduled to begin Monday and continue through Aug. 31, weather permitting.

Iowa DOT officials remind motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
