I've been a part-time Uber driver for about a year and I absolutely love it! At long last, Uber will be available in Northeast Iowa starting next month.

On March 31st, the popular ride-sharing app will debut in Cedar Falls & Waterloo, as well as Dubuque, Ames and Sioux City. Here are some things you'll need to know!

Local drivers use their own vehicles to transport riders. Drivers get ride requests sent to their phones and respond to requests in a matter of seconds. Arrival time depends on availability and location, but it's usually between 5-10 minutes. And registering is super easy, or UBER-easy, in this case.

To set up a user account, all you need is a smart phone, valid phone number, email address and credit/debit card. To be a driver--or "partner"--you must also have:

  • A 4-door vehicle in decent condition
  • Current documentation (driver's license, car insurance, registration--you won't be able to drive without these)
  • A navigation/GPS app, such as Google Maps, installed on your phone

Potential drivers also must pass a brief background check (I was on the road within 48 hours). Uber is designed to be completely paperless; everything is done through the app--fares are automatically drafted out of your account, and any cash you earn while driving is directly deposited to you every week. But here's my FAVORITE part...you only work when you want to work. You set your own schedule, so the amount of money you make is entirely dependent on you.

I seriously have had a great time driving for Uber; I'm a very social guy and I have so many ridiculous stories I could tell you!

Uber is currently available in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Des Moines, Ames and the Quad Cities. It's about time the Cedar Valley has it, too. Be prepared...you'll probably be seeing a lot more of me now!
