Waterloo Ranks High In New Health Insurance Study

Waterloo ranked 150 out of 548 in WalletHub's list of cities with the highest and lowest uninsured rates. Overall, the national uninsured rate rose a bit in 2018 to 8.5% from 7.9% the previous year. This according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau (from CNBC).

Waterloo is considered a 'Small City' on WalletHub's survey due to our population being below 100,000 residents. They explain the mthodology as:

In order to measure the rates of uninsured by city, WalletHub compared the overall insurance rates in 548 U.S. cities in 2018 using U.S. Census Bureau data. In addition to comparing the overall insurance rates, we examined the city rates based on age, race/ethnicity and income level.

An overall rank of No. 1 corresponds with the city with the lowest uninsured rate. When viewing our findings in the above tables, please note that absolute difference refers to the difference between the percentages of uninsured and insured in 2018 and 2010. A small change in the absolute difference does not necessarily indicate a negative outcome, as the percentage of uninsured people pre-Obamacare may have already been low to start with.
