Last week was National Puppy Day, which provided plenty of opportunities for people to share photos of their favorite pooches. The American Kennel Club has published their list of America's most popular breeds. What was top dog in Iowa?

Labrador retrievers ranked #1 by an overwhelming margin--the most popular breed in 44 total states, including Iowa. German Shepherds came in first in four states.

Labs are the most-registered dog for the 26th consecutive year, and it's easy to see why. According to the AKC, The Labrador Retriever's physical capabilities and outgoing, eager-to-please temperament make him an ideal family pet and sporting dog.

Iowans seem to prefer larger breeds. German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers ranked second and third, respectively.
