A woman is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student at Independence High School.

Kari Schwartz was taken into custody Friday on a charge of sexual exploitation of a minor by a school employee. The charge is connected to an incident that allegedly occurred around 10 years.

Independence police said they received a report in January that accused Schwartz of establishing an inappropriate relationship with a student during the 2009-2010 school year. According to authorities, the incident involved sexual contact.

If convicted, Schwartz could be sentenced to as many as five years in prison.
